Let’s take a deeper look at the matchup to see where NFL bettors can find value at sportsbooks in this contest.
Seattle Seahawks
looks to stay hot
Following an embarrassing performance in the season opener, has played exceptional football across the last two weeks, throwing for 624 passing yards and three touchdowns with only one interception. Tonight, Smith has another favorable matchup against one of the worst secondary units in the NFL.
If there is any concern for Smith this evening, it is due to the fact that starting left tackle Charles Cross is listed as doubtful. Cross has not allowed a single pressure in 2023 and he only allowed four quarterback hits all of last season, per PFF. His backup, Stone Forsythe, allowed an alarmingly-high 11.3% pressure rate in 2022 and has allowed a 10.1% pressure rate so far this fall. This offensive line could have their work cut out for them tonight against Dexter Lawrence and Azeez Ojulari if they are not sharp.
Seahawks’ defense struggling against to defend the air
Through three games, Seattle’s defense ranks 28th out of 32 teams in EPA/play. However, they have not been equally poor in all areas of the game. Against the pass, the Seahawks have struggled mightily – ranking 29th in Dropback EPA/play and 30th in success rate. Yet, they rank 9th in Rush EPA/play and fourth in success rate on the ground.
Seattle is well-positioned to stop the run again on Monday, facing a New York offense that is likely to be without starting running back . If the Seahawks can get pressure on Jones and limit the damage done through the air, they have a chance to have a dominant showing this evening.
New York Giants
Andrew Thomas ruled OUT
Starting left tackle Andrew Thomas will not play on Monday for the New York Giants. His backup, Joshua Ezeudu, has been one of the worst tackles in the NFL so far in 2023, ranking 62nd out 67 players at his position as a pass-blocker and 42nd as a run-blocker, per PFF. Ezeudu’s 5.1% pressure rate allowed so far this season is significantly worse than Thomas’ 3.6% pressure rate allowed from his combined 2021 and 2022 stats.
If New York is unable to protect Jones, it is likely to cause issues for the offense. This season, Jones has completed 70.5% of his pass attempts for 6.7 yards per attempt from a clean pocket, but only 55.6% of his pass attempts for 4.4 yards per attempt when under pressure. The likely absence of would only further complicate the game plan for this group.
G-Men struggling to get stops early in 2023
Entering play on Monday, New York’s defense ranks 30th out of 32 teams in EPA/play and 25th in success rate. The Giants have been almost equally poor against the run, 25th in EPA/play, as they have been against the pass, 30th in EPA/play. Much of their struggles in the secondary unit have stemmed from their inability to make opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable – ranking below the league average in defensive pressure rate in each of the first three weeks of the season.
Tonight, New York will return edge defender Azeez Ojulari to the defensive line after he practiced in full to end the week. Ojulari was ineffective in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, but he had 5.5 sacks in 2022 in only seven games played. In 2021, Ojulari had eight sacks in 17 games played. At a minimum, the return of Ojulari cannot hurt this group.
Still, the secondary unit is a concern. According to PFF, both cornerback Deonte Banks and cornerback Tre Hawkins rank 82nd or worse in coverage grade so far in 2023, out of 110 qualified players at their position. Safeties Xavier McKinney and Jason Pinnock have also been poor in coverage to begin the year, leaving this unit without much protection against deep passes on Monday.
Seahawks vs. Giants – Picks & Predictions
Both of these defenses have struggled mightily early in the season, but neither of these offenses is overly impressive either. has certainly played well from a clean pocket, but the return of Azeez Ojulari should help the Giants get at least some pressure on him tonight. Seattle will return safety Jamal Adams to the field and both offensive lines will be missing their starting left tackle. This is far from a slam-dunk play, but it is easy to envision both of these offenses struggling tonight, even in what seems like a good matchup for both quarterbacks.
